Scraper Family
1. Oo-ka-wor-dar1 , b. in Cherokee Indian Nation East, (Georgia), d.
BEF 1851. One translation for
Oo-ka-wor-dar is 'Buckskin'. This ties
in fairly closely with one of his sons; Scraper or Deesugawskee, of which one
translation is "scraping the skins" or "one who scrapes the
skins."
A legend
states that a mighty Cherokee warrior, during war with the Muskogee-Creek
Indians, killed six of their warriors before finally losing his own life in
battle. From that day on, the fallen
warrior was referred to by the honorable title "Six Killer." Some of his descendants were said to have
taken up the name Sixkiller. Perhaps
this old legend references Oo-ka-wor-dar; the father of Sixkiller, Scraper, and
others. (Joe Scraper Jr.)
He married Wah-le-yah, b. in Cherokee Indian Nation East, (Georgia), d. BEF 1851. Information regarding Wah-le-yah is
rare. She is listed as grandmother on
Charley Scraper's Miller App. A family
record showed her father as Chick-a-sa-de-he (Chickasaw Killer) and her mother
as Chowayovah. This record was a poster
sized chart completed and researched by the Cherokee Nation. It was suggested that A.D. Lester of
Westville may have been the researcher.
For the time being at least, I have been unable to confirm this data.
(Joe Scraper Jr.)
Children:
2. i. Sar-lar-we2.
3. ii. Sixkiller.
iii. Jennie Wickliffe. Jennie is shown on Charley
Scraper's Miller App as a sister to his father, Scraper. It's easy to assume that Wickliffe was her
married name, but it is possible that she was a half-sister and that Wickliffe
could have been her maiden name.
Likewise, it would be conjecture to say that she ever went by the name
Jennie Scraper, as she could have just as easily been called Jennie Sixkiller
or some other name. From information
currently available, she appears to have had at least three brothers; Sarlawee
(Squirrel), Sixkiller, and Scraper.
Assuming that we have her parents correct in Oo-ka-wor-dar and
Wah-le-yah, she may have been called Jennie Buckskin (one meaning for
Oo-ka-wor-dar) or even Jennie Buck. Or
she may have been Jennie Wah-le-yah (Hummingbird) after her mother. We can only hope that additional data will
turn up giving us a better understanding of Aunt Jennie Wickliffe. (Joe Scraper
Jr.)
4. iv. Dee-su-gaw-skee
Scraper b. ABT 1778.
Generation Two
2. Sar-lar-we2, (Oo-ka-wor-dar1). Sar-lar-we or Sar-lo-li was known as Squirrel in
english. Whereas previously I have
shown him as Sar-lar-we Scraper, I recently changed his listing to simply
Sar-lar-we, based on the old records available. At least some of his descendants used the surname "Scraper,"
so he likely did as well, yet for the sake of accuracy, for now I list him as
Sar-lar-we (Salawee, etc., various spelling)
(Joe Scraper Jr.)

According to
some family members, Dee-su-gaw-skee Scraper who married Chic-yoo-she is the
same man who married Tiana Smith, although I have not been able to confirm this
via written records, I will at this time list him as such. Uncle Charlie Scraper lists his half
brothers (Oo-le-nah-we Scraper, Runabout Scraper, & Wilson Scraper), on his
Miller roll application, but does not mention the children of Dee-su-gaw-skee & Chic-yoo-she as being
half siblings. As for the children
of Chic-Yoo-She and
'Dee-su-gaw-skee', Aunt Marge
used to have more information showing the relationship between these Scraper
families & us, but it is gone with her passing, and the loss of her notes
when fire took their home. (JSJr)
