This attempt to share and preserve our family history is an ongoing project. These family lines may contain errors and certainly contain omissions. They are intended to be used as a starting point and as a guide to help lead you down the various paths of our family lines. While I have worked for countless hours trying to ‘get my facts straight’, accuracy cannot be guaranteed in every instance. In many cases you will note that “details excluded” follows the name of a family member, meaning that birth dates and other information has been removed from living individuals. Corrections, updates, and comments are very welcome.

Nancy D. Little states in testimony before the Dawes Commission at Stilwell, Okla,  Sept 1908 , that she thought her Uncle Jordan Jackson, came west with Cherokee at the time of the emigration (Trail of Tears). In a letter to Commissioner Guion Miller dated July 1909, she states that she has found that her cousin, Sarry Jackson was on the payroll. Possibly this cousin was a daughter of Jordan.  If this statement was accurate, it's a shame that Sarry, or someone from her family wasn't able to come in and testify on Nancy's behalf.  It could have been just what Nancy needed to tip the burden of proof in her favor and get her citizenship approved. (Joe Scraper Jr.)

During the Civil War, Reuben enlisted at Memphis, Tennessee. He was stationed in Columbus, Kentucky, was wounded in the Battle of Belmont, Missouri, then died on November 17th 1861.  (from Larry Cagle)

Julia: A few years ago, I saw Julia listed with her family on an old record (census?).  It was difficult to read and would have been easy to misinterpret as a masculine name.  It was shown as Julian, whereas her name was Julianne or Julia Ann.  Her brothers William & George Lafferry (among others) were also listed with her.  Later these same brothers lived near Julia in Hamilton County, Tennessee.  They signed affidavits on behalf of her daughter Nancy D. Little, when Nancy was providing proof of her Cherokee ancestry to Cherokee Nation West.  (Joe Scraper Jr)

Of the Cherokee people from the Christie area who remember Nancy,"Grandma Little", they say that she appeared to be a fullblood.  The late Jasper Swake recalled that at one point she decided that she might as well not be Cherokee anymore, that she would be French instead.  Her maternal grandfather, George Laffery, was French (he was born on the Atlantic Ocean while his parents were migrating from France to America), so she was 1/4 French.  As for Nancy considering giving up her Cherokee heritage, that is a sad story.  From childhood I have heard stories in the family about how Nancy's Cherokee rights were stolen away from her by a lawyer.  Since then I have obtained copies of papers, which explain what happened.  Nancy arrived in the Indian Territory in about 1880 with her family.  Nancy's father had died in the Civil War and her mother remarried a man named Henry Saunders and they too had moved to Indian Territory.  Nancy's grandfather, Tandy Jackson was originally from Cherokee Nation East (present day North Carolina), at an early day, he had moved farther west to the region north of Chattanooga, but still within Cherokee Nation East (present day Tennessee).  While there he drowned in the Madison Mills Pond on the Sequatchie River (present day Sequatchie Co., Tenn.).  Nancy had affidavits from people who knew her grandfather in the Old Nation stating that he was a fullblood Cherokee. She presented these papers to lawyers who took them along with her money and promised her that they would get her instated as a member of the Cherokee Nation West.  As she put it, they took the money and ran. Although it appears to me that the old papers indicate that the lawyers made as least a half-hearted attempt to get her registered with the Cherokee Nation.  Apparently they didn't consider her case worthy of working on very hard and they never did finish it, probably because she was poor and there was more money to be made elsewhere.  One paper mentioned that the case was dismissed for lack of attention.  When the Dawes Commission was established, Nancy tried to get registered through them, but her previous lawyers in Tahlequah refused to return her proof of Cherokee ancestry.  This all occurred at a time when people including whites, blacks, and other Indian tribes were flocking to the Cherokee Nation and claiming to have Cherokee connections in an attempt to get Cherokee money and land.  I understand that the Cherokee Nation had no choice but to turn them away, because in fact most of the claims were false and would have taken money and land away from registered Cherokee people and overwhelmed the nation, but for the few like great-great-grandmother, Nancy Little, who apparently did have proof of Cherokee heritage with many people still alive at the time to verify her facts, it was and is a sad story.....  (Joe Scraper Jr)

An addition to the above note: In the old days, most Indian tribes would except outsiders into their tribe as an adopted member of said tribe, providing they felt the person would fit in and be an asset to the tribe. Hence many men of Irish, Scottish, French, English, etc descent married into the tribe.  Once the Indians began taking up the way of the white man, things changed.  Land that had belonged jointly to the whole tribe, began to be claimed by individuals and bought & sold.  As more & more land was stolen by the white establishment, there was less for the tribal members and they were forced farther and farther from their ancestral homelands.  Rolls were set up so that small sums could be given to these tribal members to ease the quilt of the white intruders.  Many Indians had scattered throughout the countryside to avoid being killed, or captured and forced on death marches, or to avoid the tragic results of the new laws that states such as Georgia enacted whereby white settlers could simply take whatever they wanted while the Indians had no say in the matter whatsoever.  Countless numbers of these Indians who fled the white invasion were not listed on the rolls.  It would seem that Reuben Jackson was one of those who was not listed on a roll, unless he was listed under a different name, perhaps his Cherokee name.  As I understand it, those who survived the Trail of Tears in 1838-39 were placed on the rolls in Indian Territory, as well as those that came before them who were known as the Treaty Party and Old Settlers.  But those who straggled into Indian Territory later from time to time had a very difficult time of it.  Unless they had family who had come with the earlier groups and enrolled with them, they were mostly out of luck. Today things are much the same with most tribes.  For example, just because one is Cherokee, he or she is not an official citizen of the Cherokee Nation unless they can prove lineage to an ancestor on the Dawes Roll.  That does not mean they are not Cherokee, you can't take that away.  Great-Great-Grandma Nancy had legal affidavits from men who knew her grandfather, Tandy Jackson, and knew that he was Cherokee.  What's more, she knew that he was Cherokee, and that's good enough for me. (Joe Scraper Jr.)

Grandma was known for her fried chicken and sweet potato pies.  She would get sweet potatoes from Dad's garden and bake them in the oven of her old stove, then cut a slit lengthwise and spread on homemade butter. Absolutely delicious!   For breakfast she loved to have a bowl of rice cooked with raisins.  I asked her why she put salt on it instead of sugar.  "That's the way I've always eaten it" she would reply.  She would laugh when I told her that she had the most beautiful brown eyes just like those raisins in her bowl.  She always had two prunes with her breakfast.  (from Patsy Tarter)

When Grandma Nancy was still living back in Tennessee, the country was still very rough & wild.  Among other things, bears were frequent visitors to the area.  They kept a barrel of water right outside the cabin door so they could easily reach out and fill a bucket or dipper with water without having to worry about the bears.  On one occasion, Nancy opened the door and reached out to fill the dipper and found that she was touching a bear who was drinking from the barrel.  Quickly slamming the door she sat down to gather her wits.  (from Patsy Smith Tarter)

Nancy mentions a sister, Tennessee Emaline Jackson, who died without issue, in her Dawes application.  Apparently, after the loss of this sister, the family began calling Nancy, 'Tennessee'.  Larry Cagle reports that his Grandmother, Bessie (Little) Cagle, told him that Nancy's nickname or Cherokee name was 'Tennessee'.

She married Feb 27, 1877 in Chickamauga Station, Chattanooga, Tenn.,1 Joseph M. Little,1 b. 16 Sep 1837 in White Co., Tennessee,15,1 (son of Joseph Washington Little and Mary R. Randals) d. 28 Dec 1908 in Christie, Okla,15,1 buried in Whitmire Cemetery, Adair Co., Okla.1

Joseph:      According the bible records of Mary Ross Little/Scraper/Vanbeber, her father's fullname was: Joseph Washington Vermetho Leland Mertis Little.  Betty (Cagle) Morris has a slight variation: Joseph Marcus Vercus William Leeland Little.  I believe that other records differ from both of these versions.  On a page of names & dates that I believe was written by Grandpa Manford N. Scraper Sr, he wrote: Nancy D. Little - Grandmother, Joseph Franklin Little -Grandfather.  Indicating that he referred to his grandpa with yet another middle name.  This surely is where grandpa's brother, Joseph Franklin 'Uncle Frank' Scraper, got his name.  (from Joe Scraper Jr.)

Joe was a laborer, a railroader, a teacher and a minister and made sure all of his children could read and write.  At one time he lived near Murfreesboro in Smith County Tennessee.

Upon arrival in the Cherokee Nation, I believe that Joseph Little and family may have stayed with Nancy's stepfather's family near Stilwell before later moving north to Scraper Hollow.  Her stepfather, Henry W. Saunders lived there as well as his brother, Lemuel S. Saunders.  Henry had brought his family from Tennessee to Indian Territory in 1877, living first in Arkansas then in Goingsnake District Cherokee Nation.  Joseph & Nancy had been married back in Hamilton County, Tennessee by James Saunders, either a brother or uncle to Henry & Lemuel.   Henry's daughter from his first marriage, Alice Saunders, also lived near the others not far from Stilwell.  (Joe Scraper Jr.)

A family story says that Archibald Scraper came to Joseph's aid, possibly during the Civil War (perhaps when Joseph was wounded or sick), as a token of his appreciation, Joseph promised to give Archibald one of his daughters to take as his wife.  More likely, Archie's aid to Joseph came later when Joseph brought his family to Indian Territory.  Possibly Archie gave food & shelter to the family during a time of dire need.  We do know that the Little family ended up settling in Scraper Hollow and lived in one of Archie's old cabins until he died, at which time they moved 3 or 4 miles north to the Christie community.  Joseph worked as a sharecropper for Archibald and was a circuit preacher.

From a letter to Manford Scraper Jr from Larry Cagle: Joseph fought for the North in the civil war.  He was taken prisoner in the battle of Rome, Georgia.  He was treated for frostbite and general debility in a Confederate Hospital.

Grandpa Joe Little kept records at his place and people often came to him for help with things, much like you would go to a teacher or elder with questions.   He always carried a little ledger book in his pocket.  Among the notations in one of ledgers was "how to choose a good milk cow".  His notes explained what characteristics to look for when buying a cow to know that she would produce good milk. (as told by Bessie Little Cagle to her son Don)

Dutch taught his nephews, Frank & Manford Scraper how to fight.  He taught them boxing techniques and told them that if they were fighting someone larger than themselves, to put a pocket knife or a rock in their hand before making a fist.(making for a jarring impact when they hit someone). (from Joe Scraper Sr. & John H. Scraper)

Churchel died the same night as his brother Reub, they are buried in the same grave, and in the same grave box.

Uncle Dutch told of when he was working in a heavily wooded area out east.  The workers had stopped for lunch break and began looking for suitable places to sit down and eat the lunches their wives had packed for them.  Dutch sat down on a log and got comfortable as he unwrapped his lunch, which generally consisted of an apple, a sandwich, and a piece of delicious homemade pie.  He then slipped his knife out of it's sheath in his boot and began cutting his apple into slices the way he always did.  Having popped a piece into his mouth, he stuck his knife point first into the log beside him to free his hand to take a bite out his sandwich.  That's when the log he was sitting on began to squirm and thrash about.  He quickly jumped to his feet and watched as a very large somewhat perturbed snake slithered off looking for deeper cover.  (from Manford Scraper)

Generation Four

8.  Julia Laminda4 Little, (Nancy Ann Delilah3 Jackson, Reuben2, Tandy1) b. 17 Apr 1878 in Tennessee, d. 18 Apr 1957 in Greeley, Colorado, buried in Linn Grove Cemetery, Greeley, CO.

On her delayed certificate of birth (file number D-322982 State of Tennessee dated Nov 22nd 1945) Julia signed her name "Julia Laminda Vanbeber".  She listed her place of birth as Nashville, Davidson Co., Tenn.

She married 28 Mar 1897 in Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory, Jerry Edward 'Ed' Vanbeber, b. 26 Aug 1874 in Linn Co., Missouri, (son of James Henry Vanbeber and Ruth Ann Hooker) d. 11 Mar 1943 in Greeley, CO, buried in Linn Grove Cemetery, Greeley, CO.

Jerry: Grandma Julia Vanbeber was afraid she would get shocked if she held the phone to her ear.  The phone lines were hooked on barbed wire fences with wooden pegs.  Not everyone had phones, so people would walk for miles to use one.

Grandpa Ed Vanbeber broke his leg one July and the bone was sticking out.  He was put on a stretcher and carried 8 miles to a farmer's house.  The phones were out, because of strong winds, rain and tornadoes the night before.  Dad rode 16 miles to get the doctor.  The doctor set the leg on the neighbor's dining room table.  They put him in the living room of their house and fixed a bed with a pulley to lift the leg up and down for six weeks.  Mother was 16 years old and went to help Grandma Vanbeber with the wash.  She had to haul water from the creek, build a fire and boil the clothes.  Grandma Barrett took flour sacks and made pajamas that would go over the cast.  Grandpa Vanbeber had a dog named 'Little Joe'.  He liked to cuss & spit tobacco at the dog.  Little Joe would eat the tobacco.  Grandpa Vanbeber would put the dog on a rope and hook it to his crutches, so Little Joe could walk with him.

Grandpa Vanbeber had three strokes before he died.  After the second stroke, "the boys took him to an old man in Greeley for a shock treatment."  One morning when he was 68 years old, Grandpa woke up, made a fire, and had his third stroke.  He fell against the stove and burned his arm.  The doctor said he would live three days or three weeks.  They didn't have I.V.'s in those days, so he had only 2 tablespoons of water in three weeks.  Three weeks to the day after his third stroke Dad asked him, "Papa, what hurts you?"  Grandpa's last words were, "Nothing! I'm just dead."   (from Judy Vanbeber Griffin & her father, James G. Vanbeber)

     Adair Co. : Westville Record 1943   March 19, 1943

Ed VANBEBER, father of Mrs. John KIRBY of this city, passed away March 11th at his home in Greeley, Colo., at the age of 67 years.   Mr. VANBEBER spent the greater part of his life in this community, having reared his family of seven children here, leaving Adair county in 1931 and has lived in Colorado since that time.  He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, two daughters, five sons, one sister, four brothers, several grandchildren and a host of friends. Two sons and three grandsons are serving in the U.S. Army.

Baby Joseph was killed by a falling tree.  It's not known whether the tragedy was the result of a tree crashing through the house during a storm, or possibly Little Joseph was laying in a cradle or on a quilt on the ground while the adults worked nearby cutting a tree for lumber or firewood.

Among the crowd who gathered to watch his sister, Mary, marry Arch Scraper, Bob was one of the official witnesses who signed the marriage certificate.  Liddy Whitmire was the other official witness.

Bob Little worked in Mr. Taylor's General Store in Christie, Okla. He was considered a "figure head," he could add a whole column of numbers in his head.  Only went to the 5th grade in school. (from Betty Cagle Morris).

He was very strong and was good at doing arithmetic in his head.  He once carried a 100 lb. sack of potatoes on his shoulder for half a mile without changing shoulders.  He also hewed 35 railroad ties in one day using a broad axe. (from Bessie Little Cagle).

     He married Aug 30, 1908 in Christie, Okla,[17] Ida Rosetta Conrad,[18] d. abt 1986 in California.[19]

                             Children:

            26.     i.     Robert "Roy"5 Little b. 1908.

            27.     ii.    Mildred Little b. 28 Oct 1911.

10.  Mary Ross4 Little,15 (Nancy Ann Delilah3 Jackson, Reuben2, Tandy1) b. Jan 11, 1883 in Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory,15 d. 25 Aug 1965 in Mulvane, KS, buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Beloit, KS.

After Mary's first husband Arch Scraper passed away, she married William Vanbeber and left Scraper Hollow.  The family lived in Chouteau, Okla, Strang, Okla. and Pryor, Okla. before moving to Galena, KS, Ft. Scott, KS, and then, in 1915, they moved to Asherville, KS.  The family moved from place to place as Billy's job with the railroad required.  The railroad dismissed him when he was close to retirement.  Shortly before this, he had broken his hip when he slipped while loading watermelons onto his truck.  He had a truck farm (near Asherville, KS) where he raised watermelons, cantaloupes, and sweet potatoes.

-----A story about Joseph Little, Mary's father.  as told by Uncle Manford Scraper Jr.-----  Archibald Scraper came to Joseph's rescue, possibly during the Civil War, as a token of his appreciation, Joseph Little promised to give Archibald one of his daughters to wed.

Joe Little and family lived up the hill above the big spring (Scraper Spring) from Archibald.  Arch would have seen the children from time to time as they grew up, especially when they were sent to bring water from the spring, gather firewood, or other chores.   Aunt Kae (Mary Kae Scraper Zerofski) adds to her brother Manford's story---- Aunt Julia told me that when she and Mary were young ladies they would sometimes come upon Arch Scraper going the opposite direction on the walking path or wagon road in Scraper Hollow.  Julia said that her & Mary would giggle as young ladies do because Arch was such a charming and handsome man. Later when Arch & Mary were married, it was an arranged marriage.

Mary was a crack shot with a gun.  Aunt Marie recalls hearing her mother tell her of when she shot a turkey in the head..... while it was running, so they could have meat on the table.  Mary carried a small pistol for protection, a' hidy-out gun.'  This was the same gun she used when she shot the turkey.  Mary's son, Manford, decided to check the accuracy of his mother's gun one time.  He drove a large nail part way into a post.  Then he backed off a few paces and took aim and fired. His shot had driven the nail all the way into the post.  "Yes sir, it shoots true alright", he said.

Max Scraper remembers that when Grandma Mary got very upset with the boys (when they were playing a little too rough with the young ones, or getting a bit rowdy), she would scold them in Indian rather than English.

She married (1) 29 Mar 1898 in Baron, Indian  Terr. -- Christie, Okla., Archibald Scraper, b. ABT 1820 in Cherokee Nation East,[20] (son of Dee-su-gaw-skee Scraper and Tiania Smith) d. 13 May 1904 in Cherokee Nation West.

William:      Billy and his brothers & sisters spoke Cherokee.  They were part Cherokee through their mother's side of the family. (from Vanbeber descendant Nadine Duvall)

Some of Billy's brothers lived near Christie, Indian Territory during the early 1900's.  Billy may have lived there as well or may have been visiting family when he met Mary (Little) Scraper who was recently widowed and had two small sons to raise.  Billy had a young son from his first marriage to raise, so the two were married later that year.  In those days it was difficult enough for a two parent family to feed and support children, but for a single mother or father it was a very great hardship.  No foodstamps, welfare, or any other free hand outs.  Mary's sister, Julia had been married to Billy's brother Ed for several years and it may have been at Ed & Julia's place that Mary and Billy first met.

I have wonderful memories of Aunt Daisy & Uncle Mike at their place in Greeley, Colorado.  Memories of their warmth and hospitality, of the farmyard, kittens running to and fro, chickens scrambling to get out of the way, and of the seemingly endless places to explore.  On one visit us Scraper kids picked out a car for Liz to drive, (she was 14 or 15, almost old enough to drive after all), it was a mid 60's model MG as I recall, sitting right smack dab in the middle of Uncle Mike's salvage yard of wrecked automobiles.  Uncle Mike didn't want to break our hearts by telling us that it would be too expensive to fix, so he just said he'd think about it and patiently waited for us to become preoccupied with some other adventure.

I'll never forget the fishing trip at the river that ran thru their farm.  The carp we were catching weighed several pounds each and did not want to come ashore at all.  They put up a tremendous fight as we fought to bring them unto dry land.  We took 6 or 7 of these fish back to Grandpa's, where Grandma Mae did a wonderful job of cooking them for supper.  The only problem was that in those days oil was dumped on land adjacent to the river we had been fishing in, literally oozing up from the rocks along the riverbank.  Even after they were cooked, the fish tasted like used motor oil.  As difficult as it was, we all did our best to eat some of the fish, and not a one of us mentioned to Mae that they tasted like she had fried them on the greasy oily engine of grandpa's car. (Joe Scraper Jr).

GRACE VANBEBER HOME ESCAPES KANSAS TORNADO

It took Mrs. M. E. Davidson (Daisy) of east of Greeley exactly a week to learn the fate of her sister following a tornado which devastated Topeka, Kansas.

She had tried to call several times but communications were practically non-existent.  Finally, Monday morning, she received a letter from Miss Grace Vanbeber, her sister.

Miss Vanbeber is related to several people in the Greeley area of the same name.  In her letter she said she was returning to Topeka from Kansas City on the Kansas Turnpike when the storm hit.

She said it took her two hours to reach her home from the time she reached the Topeka city limits.  Her home was three blocks from the path of the storm and escaped major damage.

Miss Vanbeber works in the planning department of the Kansas Highway Department.

Jennie contracted tetanus (lockjaw) at an early age and could never again open her jaws.

Aunt Jennie Smith's dentist (Albert Gibson) at Tahlequah ruined her jaw.  After this happened, she had 3 upper front teeth pulled and a partial plate made.  She could push food through, but couldn't chew at all, just wallow the food around & swallow it.  She was one of the sweetest women I ever knew.  She had a lot of faith in God answering prayers.  During World War II, she promised God if he would bring all of her nephews back from the war, she would give up her noon meal.  She started fasting that meal and continued to skip the noon meal until her death.  All the boys came home after the war.(from Betty Cagle Morris).

Places of residence included Christie, Okla- Kansas City- Muskogee, Okla-and Belton, MO

Aunt Jenny was known as a healer and could remove warts.  She counted my warts, tied that number of knots in a length of string. She did something with a washcloth and the string, within a month or so my warts disappeared and never returned. (From Patsy Smith Tarter)

People would call on Aunt Jenny when they had any kind of problem, marriage problems, or anything at all.  They called her the 'Prayer Lady'. (From Patsy Smith Tarter)

Besides strawberries, Uncle Henry grew peanuts and popcorn.  Aunt Jenny kept her eggs, cream, milk, and butter in the spring beside grandma's house at Christie.  We were not allowed to go inside the spring enclosure.   Aunt Jenny would fry peanut patties (candy) in her cast iron skillet for us.  They were a real treat!  At Muskogee, where Uncle Henry worked for the Drive-in Theatre, there was also a golf course, a filling station, a boat shop, and several small houses.  They lived in one of these houses.  (from Patsy Smith Tarter)

Jennie Smith would often sit in her swing/glider in her front yard and wave to and say good morning to the children as they passed by on their way to the Christie School. (from Wilma Dean Williams Parks)

She married Henry N. Smith, b. Jan 23, 1889, (son of Frank M. Smith and Nancy Ann Leak) d. Nov 26, 1970, buried in Muskogee, Okla, military U. S. Army - WW I.

Henry:      Henry Smith and his father before him raised strawberries.  He also operated a mechanic repair shop at his place(80 acres at Christie,Okla).  The store facing the road (now Highway 62) adjoining the front of his property was once owned by Mr. Christie.  Bob Little used to work in the store.

Uncle Henry used the store building in front of his house as his shop.  He kept his tools & supplies in it.  When people got stuck at nearby Peacheater Creek while trying to cross, Uncle Henry would hitch up his mules and pull them out for a dollar.  Later a bridge was built and travelers no longer had to call on Henry & his mules to pull them from the mud at the Peacheater Creek bank.  (from C. Eugene Little)

Aunt Kae (Mary Kae Scraper Zerofski) recalls traveling with her parents to visit Aunt Jennie & Uncle Henry.  Uncle Henry worked for the Drive-in Movie Theatre in Muskogee, Oklahoma.  Aunt Jennie & Uncle Henry lived in a house up the hill from the theatre and Kae would walk with him as he cleaned the concession stand and other things at the theatre.  He had two speakers wired up in the house so they could all watch & hear the movie from the comfort of their home.   They generally stayed with Henry & Jennie while in Oklahoma, but they also took out time to visit Aunt Bessie & Uncle Charlie Cagle in their big white house in Baron.  Also they visited with Uncle Charlie & Aunt Lizzie Little at the old Frisco Railroad Depot at Christie.

                             Children:

Charlie and Lizzie lived at the old train depot near Christie for awhile.  The Depot had been converted into a dwelling after the tracks were all pulled up during World War II.  The tracks were taken up from Muskogee to St. Louis for use in the war effort. They were sent overseas where they were placed and used for troop movement and to supply troops with supplies.  Charlie worked for the Frisco Railroad.

Uncle Charlie kept a train collection out in his garage.  We always enjoyed seeing his train sets when we visited. (from Patsy Smith Tarter).

Charlie & Lizzie used to buy gasoline for their car at our store (the Jim Williams Store in Christie).  We had one gas pump, Phillips 66. (from Wilma Dean Williams Parks).

Grace played the guitar and sang.

Whenever Mom passed through Miami, Oklahoma she would visit her sister, Cattahlyah's grave.  The cemetery gates were locked at night, so if we happened to arrive at night, Mom and the rest of us would sleep in Ralph's double seat Model A at the cemetery gate.  The next morning she would pay her respects and we would be on our way.  Mom wasn't about to pass through without visiting her sister. (from Patsy Smith Tarter)

One time when Grace & her brother Charlie were quite young, their mother Nancy and others were picking strawberries.  While the adults gathered the fruit, the little ones were left to play on a quilt on the ground.  Checking on the children from time to time to make sure they were safe, at one point Nancy suddenly looked over and realized that they were gone.  Frantically they all began searching for the children.  They found that the kids had wandered off and were sitting and playing in a bear den.  Quickly they grabbed the children and took them back.  (from Patsy Smith Tarter)

Mom worked nights at the Griffin Canning Plant at Westville.  They canned tomatoes, green beans, etc. (from Patsy Smith Tarter)

Irvin: Dad was quite a storyteller.  He would also entertain us by dancing and putting on shows with the wooden puppets he had made.  He also had a fantastic garden where he raised all kinds of vegetables.  He worked for the Frisco Railroad, then the Kansas City Southern Railroad.  Later he worked as a security guard for Skelly Oil in Grandview, Missouri.  He was Scot-Irish & German. Dad's nickname was "Lucky". Uncle Charlie Little started calling him "Lucky" and it stuck with him. (From Patsy Tarter)

Dad paid $300 for a buggy with red wheels when he & Mom married.  They had a pony "Topsy" to pull it.  Mom only had two dresses, so Dad took her to town to buy cloth and a pretty sweater.

Dad & Mother were baptized in the old creek there in Oklahoma.  Mom remembered, "We was ducked under."

My parents moved to Colorado when Dorothy was three months old.  A few months later they got their first car.  It had a rumble seat.  One day they went to pick potatoes near Eaton.  They didn't have enough money to fill the gas tank.  They had to back up the hill by the airport, so enough gas would run in the tank and they could make it home.

Milk & butter had to be put in buckets and hung in the cold water in the horse tanks.  They got an ice box, and finally when Charlie was a baby, they got a refrigerator.  They had an old cook stove.  To iron clothes, the iron was placed on the stove with a pot over it to heat up.  Curling irons had to be stuck in old kerosene lamp globes to heat.

Dad worked for the railroad for 11 years.  He worked on the first railroad that went through Haxtun, Colorado.   (from Judy Vanbeber Griffin & her father, James G. Vanbeber)

He married 21 Oct 1924 in Adair Co., Okla, Dora Elvira Barrett, b. 3 Jun 1908 in Haxton, Phillips Co., CO, (daughter of George Howard Barrett and Mary 'Maggie' Huskey) d. Oct 3, 1994 in Greeley, CO, buried in Mizpah Cemetery, Plattsville, CO.

Dora: Dora had to get water from the creek across from her home in Oklahoma.  One day a man rode up on his horse to get a drink and splashed her, getting her wet.  That is how Dora met James Vanbeber, her future husband.

James asked Dora's mother for her hand in marriage because he was afraid of Dora's father.  He finally talked to Mr. Barrett and received the reply, "If you can make her a decent living, you can have her."  They set the date for October 24, 1924.  Dora said, "I was purt near 17 when we married."  Mrs. Barrett got blue satin and made the wedding dress.  It had a big white lace collar.  She also sold chickens to buy Dora's wedding shoes.  Mrs. Vanbeber, (James' mother) picked geese to make them a feather and tick bed to sleep on.  Their wedding gifts were: 1 dozen hens from Dora's mother, 1 dozen chickens from James' mother, and a milk cow from Dora's father.

Grandma Barrett (Dora's mother) was a good cook.  She made the best cinnamon rolls, cakes, light bread, and fried potatoes.  She always had yeast in a jar called bread starter.  She made wonderful sour milk biscuits and cornbread.

Grandma Barrett got her skirt caught on the buggy and broke her ankle.  They didn't have crutches, so she had to put her knee on a chair.  She slid the chair around the kitchen in order to cook.

Grandpa Barrett and neighbors killed 8-9 hogs in October to get ready for winter.  The women sewed long strips made from flour sacks to stuff sausage in, then it was smoked.  The lard was rendered until it "took to cracklins."  The lard cracklins were used to make lye soap.  The lye soap cleaned overalls "quicker than anything."

Whenever neighbors were sick or had a baby, Grandma Barrett took noodles, butter, etc. to them.  They took meat whenever hogs were killed.

Grandpa Barrett used four horses to cultivate and plant the fields until noon.  Then they would use four fresh horses.   (from Judy Vanbeber Griffin & her father, James G. Vanbeber)

Frank's Cherokee name was Am-u-ne-ga  (White Water).  As a boy he was called Archy, and also Smokie.

At Asherville High School, Frank played center on the football squad.

Company E, 4th Battalion, K. S. G.,(COMPANY "E," 4TH BATTALION, Asherville, Kansas) became widely known over the state of Kansas on account of its activities in the Liberty loan and Red Cross drives. It, also, participated in rounding up slackers, alien enemies, and German sympathizers. It was one of the best drilled companies of the Kansas State Guard. (Uncle Frank is listed as a private with this company. Also listed is James S. Vanbeber, a brother to Frank's step-father)

Manford's Cherokee name was 'Cho-oo-nay-ga' or 'White Tobacco'.

In about 1934, Manford packed up his family and headed for Arkansas.  He had built a trailer out of a Model-T chassis and traded it for 40 acres near Fayetteville, site unseen.  The family drove to Arkansas in a Willis Knight automobile.  Manford had cut the cab off and built a box on it, the kids were able to sleep in the back.  One of the items that they had on board was Grandma's kitchen stove.  It was a kerosene stove and it had four burners and an oven.  The kerosene was contained in a glass bottle.  They ended up trading the stove for a tank of gas, groceries, and $5, which was all the cash the proprietor had in his store (it was during the great depression).  Once they reached the hill country, Grandma and Manford Jr would place rocks behind the wheels to keep the car from rolling backwards while they tried to get it up the steep grades.  When they arrived at the land, they found that a forest fire had destroyed the house that they were going to stay in temporally while they built a house of their own.  Their belongings were tied down on top of the car, including mattresses which they would take down and throw on the ground to sleep on when they found a good camping spot. They camped by the river for a couple of weeks in a cave with a large overhanging cliff overhead.   They then went to stay with Henry and Jennie Smith (Grandma Mary's sister) for a few days, at Christie, Oklahoma.  There was a spring near the front porch and Great-Grandma Nancy was afraid the baby (Johnny) was going to fall into it.  Things didn't work out, so the family moved back to Asherville, KS.

When I was about 8 or 9 years old, Grandpa Manford told me that when he was a boy in Oklahoma, one method of fishing was to dive into the river with a large hook tied to a line, the diver would attempt to jab the hook into a giant catfish, while others on shore would be ready to haul in the line, and try to get the monster onto dry land.   I believe he mentioned the Grand River as a fishing spot. (Joe Scraper Jr)

Manford was very good at witching for water.  He could tell where to place a well and how deep the water was from the surface.  He preferred a peach or willow branch for dowsing, but he could dowse with almost anything if necessary.  He once used a D-style shovel handle in a pinch. Many people called on him when they needed to locate a good place to dig a well.

Little.  He worked at the canning factory with his mother, cousin Flora Caldwell, and others.  The gals peeled tomatoes and were paid by the bucket.  Don was the gatekeeper.  He used a switch to keep the cattle from entering into the loading area.  He made three cents an hour.  There was no electricity in those days, the factory was operated by steam. (from Don Cagle)

Don enlisted in the U. S. Army in January 1938 and went in at Ft. Bliss.  He was under General Patton in the African campaign where he spent 11 months, mostly in the mountains.  They used M7 105 Howitzers and 50 caliber machine guns.  Coordinates were radioed into the tank and they mostly fired at targets far in front of their position, out of their sight, but occasionally they came into close range combat.  Don began as a horse soldier in the Mounted Calvary, 82nd Field Artillery Battalion.  Later he drilled recruits and taught them how to handle the weaponry and what they needed to know to stay alive.  He spent most of his service in the 62nd Battalion.

Don recalls his mother telling of the time when Buster Scraper and one of her brothers rode their horses into a church and started shooting their guns in the air.  People ran in every direction screaming and hollering.  Bessie was there with a sister or a friend.  They were so frightened that they dove out a window.        Harold & Calvin Moss reported in together for the war effort.  They were to report in at the Stilwell Cafe. It was a long ways from the town of Christie where they lived, so they headed in the day before to make sure they weren't late.  They slept on the courthouse lawn, but it was very cold so they went to the jail and the jailer let them sleep on beds there the rest of the night.  When they made it to the cafe the next day they were fed and shipped off by train to Fort Sill, Oklahoma.  Harold was put in the Air Force and Calvin was put in the Army infantry where he spent three years on the front lines at Guadalcanal and the Philippines.        When Edward was born, Dad went to town and bought a red wagon & a doll for his first born.

When Edward was a baby, the family lived in a haunted house.  Grandpa Barrett (Dora's father) rented two houses, so Mom & Dad lived in one of them.  They heard gunshots when nobody was there.  They heard water dripping like rain was leaking from the roof.  Sometimes it sounded like a whole bunch of dishes fell off the table or boards were creaking.  One time Fount was staying there.  He was laying in bed when a little boy with a red cap walked up and looked at him, then disappeared.  Dad said there were graves under the house.

I loved watching Grandma Mary make the beautiful rugs.  Her huge loom was in her bedroom and I remember that she would let me watch her work.  My sister, Luci, and I used to go out in her back yard in the crabapple tree orchard and play statue and when Luci got tired and left, I would make up dances that went on forever, then fall on the ground and look up at the sky until someone came looking for me.  I also remember the large mulberry trees.  Sometimes we would be frightened by a snake in the tree, but we did enjoy eating those mulberries.
