Generation One

1.  Stephen M.1 Whitmire, d. probably Hall County, Georgia.

     George and Jonathan R. Whitmire (regarding transfer of slaves in1857) ....The brothers were the sons of Stephen and Charlotte (Downing) Whitmire. George was born in 1825 and Jonathan (also sometimes listed as Johnson or Joshua) was born about 1823.  George and Jonathan were small when both their parents died.  Their uncle, John Downing, reared them.

         Charlotte had inherited 32 slaves from her father, George Downing.  In 1932, John Downing with the two Whitmire sons and their 28 slaves emigrated from Big Savannah in Georgia to the Cherokee Nation west of the Mississippi.  They settled along Barren Fork Creek in what became the Going Snake District of the Cherokee Nation.  The only child of John Downing, Martha Jane, and her husband, Jackson Smith, emigrated to the west in 1834 and also settled in the same area.  (from an article by Jack D. Baker in the Goingsnake Messenger, page 68, vol XVII, #3, 2000; source sited - Cherokee Nation Papers, volume 235, page 35, Archives and Manuscripts Division, Oklahoma Historical Society).

He married (1) Mary Porter.  He married (2) Charlotte Downing. (Some sources show Stephen married to Elizabeth Downing rather than Charlotte.  It may be that they are one and the same, as in Charlotte Elizabeth Downing or Elizabeth Charlotte Downing).

                             Children by Charlotte Downing:

            2.       i.     Johnson R.2 Whitmire b. ABT 1823.

            3.       ii.    George Washington Whitmire b. 1824.

                             Children by Mary Porter:

                      The children of Stephen Whitmire and Mary Porter are not included here as this report is based on the Whitmires who came to Cherokee Nation Indian Territory before the Trail of Tears.

Generation Two

2.  Johnson R.2 Whitmire, (Stephen M.1) b. ABT 1823 in Cherokee Nation East, d. OCT 1900, buried in Whitmire Cemetery, Peavine, I. T.

     Excerpts from a statement by Garland Whitmire, g-son of Jonathan Whitmire, signed 10/14/1985;

     "When the Civil War started, grandfather had a thriving plantation on Baron Fork Creek. He had some 40 odd slaves on his place. He remained neutral in the war and he was removed to the southern Indian Territory on Red River. The Union troops had taken over his farm and home for the duration of the war and wrecked all his equipment and burned his log house down. When he returned after the war he only built back the lower story of his house. The foundation can still be located by the native stone that was used for the foundation and fireplace.

     "He had to release all the slaves he had and some of them that had no last name took the Whitmire name when they were released. After the Civil War, all slaves became free. Many of them didn't want to leave their Master Jonathan. They wanted to stay and continue working for him, but he couldn't let them stay because he had no money to pay them. Some he let share crop his property so they could make a living.

Every one called him Doc Bird. He was a community quack doctor. Dad always said old Doc Bird poisoned his sister Sarah Jane to get control of all her property. Dad always did believe Uncle Charlie hunted him down and killed him because he just disappeared. No one ever knew just what happened to him. At that time, Uncle Charlie was good for doing something like that. Because it was before statehood, the man that could shoot the fastest and straightest lived the longest. Charles was an expert with a rifle, shotgun or pistol. He and Dad both carried 45 Colt pistols.

     She married David Levi Bird, married 25 Jul 1899, b. 5 Feb 1854 in Blount Co., Tenn.

7.  Charles Holt "Tobe"3 Whitmire, (Johnson R.2, Stephen M.1) b. 3 Feb 1865, d. 1 Dec 1943 in Adair Co., Okla, buried in Old Green Cemetery, Adair Co., Okla.  The following story is passed on as it was told to Irene Whitmire Carey, (Irene and Tobe being first cousins twice removed):

     Uncle Charlie Whitmire, better known to the family as Tobe, was a lawman here in the Cherokee Nation.  The judge would give Uncle Charlie a warrant for a man and tell him to hunt him down and bring him in.  Uncle Charlie knew everyone and every place for miles around.  He would ride to the man's house, tie his horse to the porch rail, and go in and have supper with the family.  He would visit with the family all evening and they would put him up for the night.  The next morning they would all sit down to breakfast and when they were just about finished Tobe would say "We'll, I guess you'all know why I'm here, no sense in putting it off any longer.  You know I don't have any choice but to take you in".  And Uncle Charlie would take the man to see the judge.    They say that Tobe always got his man.  He rode a big black stallion.  Wouldn't ride anything accept a stallion.

     Excerpts from a statement by Garland Whitmire, nephew of Charles Whitmire, signed 10/14/1985; "He [Garland's father, Jonathan] and [uncle] Charlie used to be quite ornery when they were young. He used to say Charlie was one of the best horse thieves in Indian Territory and he said Charlie wouldn't steal a horse if it didn't have a US Army brand on it.  He had no use for the union army on account of the way they destroyed his fathers property during the Civil War. Dad told us children about one time Charlie was running from the posse and they cornered him in the cane breaks on the Arkansas River and had him surrounded. They made camp and was going to wait him out. Charlie told dad he sure thought they had him for sure this time. The posse was all out around the cane break and had left a big fat Negro cook in camp. Charlie said he crawled up a deer trail in sight of their camp and made some noise. The Negro grabbed a double barrel shot gun and came running down the trail. Charlie said he sat real quiet and when that Negro got real close, he shot him crosswise through the cheeks of his butt. When that Negro cook screamed and started running for the camp, the posse all made a dash to where the noise came from and that gave him a chance to go out the other side of the break and escape and he headed back to Indian Territory and home. "Uncle Charlie always rode a stallion horse. No one could get near his horse or saddlebags. He trained them himself. His horse would stop when he came up to a low limb on a tree. Charlie would reach up with his gun barrel and feel the limb, then he would tell him it is OK. Then his horse would go on under it. Charlie's stomping grounds ranged from Oil Springs to Chewey and Scraper. Also to Westville, Stilwell, Sallisaw, Fort Gibson, Muskogee and Tahlequah. He stayed closer around Tahlequah and Stillwell than any other place. He knew every trail in the four counties. He would ride into a place, stay around a few days and leave. No one would ever know when he would show up or know when he was going to leave. He would tell dad he had to go to Fort Gibson or Sallisaw. He would saddle his horse and ride off. No one ever knew just when or where they were likely to see Uncle Charlie.

     "Around 1885 or 1890, Charlie was being chased pretty well all over the Indian Territory by the US Marshals. Dad, being a justice of the peace, he got Charlie to stay hidden out until he made arrangements to get the charges dropped against him. The only way was if Charlie would become a deputy marshal. The Army dropped all the horse stealing charges against Uncle Charlie. Dad always said that was the cheapest way for the army to get him stopped from stealing US Government horses. He always had the best of horse flesh and had them trained like a house pet. No one could slip up on him in the woods. His horse would let him know if someone was nearby. His equipment at hand was a bedroll and a raincoat. A good saddle and two 45 colt six shooters and a double barrel shotgun. He was at home wherever night overtook him. He was never married that I know of. He was on the move too much. Dad always said he had taken his job too seriously and said he had become the judge, jury and executioner. Dad said Charlie never arrested anyone that he knew about. He always said when Charlie was asked to go out after a bootlegger, they just disappeared and he couldn't find any trace of them. Charlie Whitmire died in December of 1940 on Jewel Whitmire's place on the Ross Swimmer road west of Westville, Oklahoma. I located his grave through Jewel in December of 1984. I placed a grave stone at his grave. He is buried in the Green Cemetery on the Ross Swimmer Road, west of Westville Oklahoma.

8.  Jonathan R. Jr3 Whitmire, (Johnson R.2, Stephen M.1) b. 9 Apr 1867, d. 1 Feb 1946.  Excerpts from a statement by Garland Whitmire, son of Jonathan Whitmire Jr, signed 10/14/1985;

     "My father, Jonathan R Whitmire and Henry homesteaded 160 acres each at what was known as Oil Springs on the Illinois River 21 miles north east of the town of Tahlequah, Indian Territory. Here he proceeded to make his home. Father acquired a steam operated sawmill and proceeded to saw his own lumber and build his home. It was a 19 room hotel built of rough sawed lumber from the white oak timber that grew on the property. He put in a grist mill and would grind corn and wheat to make corn meal and flour. He bought one of the first steam operated thrashing machines in Indian Territory. It was a stationary machine called the Red River special. He would harvest grain and grind it into meal and flour for the surrounding neighborhood and take meal and flour or grain for payment. He would also saw hogs into lumber for neighbors and take lumber for his work of sawing it. He also had many head of cattle, horses and hogs. He had his brand registered and they all ran loose or wild as it was termed when the territory was known as open range or free range for everyone's livestock. Every one in Indian Territory built a fence around their cultivated fields to keep the stock from entering the fields. Most of the fences were made from rails split from oak timber and was called rail fence.

     "My father used to talk about their younger days when he and his brother Charlie, sister Sarah Jane and Charlotte were growing up. Dad had a large scar on top of his right foot. I remember asking him how he got it. He said when he was about 18 years old he and Charlie and some Indian friends went to an Indian stomp dance and they all got pretty drunk. He said he got on his horse and started kicking his horse in the sides and firing his pistol into the ground and somehow his foot got in the way. He said, "I just ruined a damn good pair of boots." He said the ball went clear through and out the sole of the boot. He said it was a 44 ball. It possibly was a cap and ball pistol.

     "Father was living at Oil Springs in the late 1880s. He was married to an Indian girl about this time. I only heard him mention her first name. It was Minnie. They had one son named Frank. He said Minnie just had taken the boy and disappeared. He didn't see him again until he was about 14 and came and stayed a while with him, then left.

     "Father put in for a post office around 1890. It was granted and Oil Springs was known as Whitmire, Indian Territory. He then applied for the justice of the peace position and obtained it. The post office ran until about 1915 or 1916.

     "My father, Jonathan R. Whitmire lived at Oil Springs, Indian Territory and met and married my mother. Her name was Frances Leenor (sp) Willis.  They were married in April of 1906 and lived at Oil Springs and raised their family there.

15.  Eli Hicks3 Whitmire, (George Washington2, Stephen M.1) b. 13 Jun 1858 in the family's double log house, Whitmire Community, Goingsnake District, I. T., d. 10 Dec 1936 in Adair Co., Okla.      As a boy, Eli witnessed the Goingsnake Massacre near his home.  He helped his mother carry the dead and wounded to her front porch to care for them until relatives arrived.

       In about 1885 he taught at the Whitmire School which he had attended as a boy.   His father, George W. Whitmire had established this school in December 1869 on the Whitmire Plantation.  Prior to that had his first schooling in a little negro cabin on the plantation.  It was important to his mother, Betsy, that all the children received an education.

           Eli attended the Whitmire Primary School until old enough to go to the Male Seminary in Tahlequah, where he studied for some time, leaving that institution to enter the Indian University, where he remained from1876 to 1880.  Having received an excellent education, Mr. Whitmire devoted himself to teaching, his first school being that of Tyler's Valley and the next the Whitmire school, above referred to, where he taught for seven years.  In 1886 he married Mary, daughter of Elias Wright.  After clerking in a mercantile house in Cincinnati for one year, Mr. Whitmire returned to the Whitmire school, where he taught for a term and a half.  In 1887 he was elected to the Senate, and during his office term of two years rendered himself remarkable (in conjunction with R. W. Lindsay) by holding out for a high price of lease for the grazing privileges of land west of 96, always sustaining the chief in his various vetoes on that occasion.  By this effort the amount was raised from$125,000 to $200,000.  At the expiration of his term Mr. Whitmire was elected secretary of the Board of Education.  During the past year he has not sought an office. although he takes a lively interest in politics, having done so ever since he left school.  Mr. Whitmire was probably the youngest man that ever obtained a seat in the Cherokee Senate, and he secured a larger majority than anybody else in the district.  He has a farm of 100 acres in cultivation, on the Barren Fork.  Mr. Whitmire is a Master Mason, and belongs to the Flint Lodge.  He is a gentleman of good appearance and address-- quiet, dignified, and well educated.  He is very popular, and calculated to make a success in public life, although he has no political ambition at present.  (from 'The Indian Territory' by O'Beirne)

          Eli ran a store at Addilee.  He was appointed Postmaster at Addilee June 23rd 1924.        Eva Lee (Blackwood) Whitmire recalls hearing that White had gotten his boot caught in the track and the train hit him.

       Stilwell Standard-Sentinel Sept 28th, 1911: Freight Train Kills Indian. While Attending Big Association Whitmire Tires Out and Rests on Railroad and is Killed.

                 White Whitmire was killed by a northbound freight train last Saturday morning about 4 or 5 o'clock, at Peavine, about four miles north of Stilwell.  He had been attending an association at that place as a visitor, and it was reported that he had been drinking some, and had wandered to the railroad track, where it is supposed he had gone to sleep, when the train came along.  His head was badly mangled, and he had several bruises over his body.  The train was stopped, and the crew notified the crowd, who took charge of his body.   It is a most unfortunate affair, but proves how extremely dangerous it is to fool with booze.

           In grade school Irene was asked to play the part of a dancing Shirley Temple in between scenes of the school play because she was a great dancer.  The problem was, she was extremely shy and she told her teachers that she couldn't do it in front of all those people in the audience.  They finally coaxed her into performing by dressing her up in a Shirley Temple dress, leotards, dancing shoes, and a curly hairdo just like Shirley wore, and by promising her a doll.  They held the doll off to the side of where she was dancing so she could see it while she danced.  She never once looked toward the audience while she performed for fear of freezing up, instead she either looked down at the stage or over at the doll.

            When Bill and Irene lived in California she took a test to become a teacher when a position became available at a nearby school.  She scored highest on the test out of the 200 who took it, despite the fact that she only had a grade school education. (Her Grandpa John Watt had pulled her out of school telling her that girls didn't need high school, they were supposed to get married and have children.)  Irene was offered the job and she accepted.  The position was teaching troubled children.  The school didn't expect Irene to last long as they had a high turn over rate due to the stress of trying to deal with these disruptive kids and maintain discipline.  But to their surprise, Irene soon had her students' eating out of her hand' so to speak.  Irene had a very special gift of dealing with people, children and adults alike.  Her love for all people was like a bright light shining forth.  One could not be near her for long without loving her in return.  Within a short time, the classroom changed from chaos to peaceful as Irene's students became respectful and well behaved.  Irene's love for them and their love for her changed them from failing to outstanding students and they began receiving praise and awards for their accomplishments from others in the community and the region.    (these notes as told by Irene to Joe Scraper Jr summer of 2005)

            Irene was known far & wide for her amazing cooking abilities.  She was second to none when it came to cooking everything from a pot of stew to a huge feast.  As a young child she took over the cooking & housework chores for her brothers and sisters and Grandpa Watt when her mother passed away.  I believe she cooked for a restaurant in California after her & Bill moved there. Whenever there was a family gathering, cemetery working, or any other need, she would bring containers filled with mouthwatering food. (JFSJr).
