Chapter 3 – The Sixkiller Family June 2009

Compiled by Joe Scraper Jr.

This attempt to share and preserve our family history is an ongoing project. These family lines may contain errors and certainly contain omissions. They are intended to be used as a starting point and as a guide to help lead you down the various paths of our family lines. While I have worked for countless hours trying to ‘get my facts straight’, accuracy cannot be guaranteed in every instance. In many cases you will note that “details excluded” follows the name of a family member, meaning that birth dates and other information has been removed from living individuals. Corrections, updates, and comments are very welcome.  Please feel free to email me (Joe Scraper Jr.) at: jscraperfamily@yahoo.com   And please include the name Sixkiller in the subject line.

Generation One

1.  Sixkiller1 , b. in Cherokee Nation East, (son of Oo-ka-wor-dar and Wah-le-yah) d. 10 Oct 1856.  Cherokee name was U-li-s-ka-s-di, also written U-li-aga-sti, Ool-skah-sut-ty & U-scos-ta.  He was also known by the name Rufas Sixkiller and Old Soldier.

When The Sixkiller was living at Oostanaula, his nephew, John Gutseysdi, was attending Spring Place Mission.  The records show John was a son of Dunawee (Bullfrog?) and Tsikisk.  John's grandfathers who visited the mission were Chiquaki of Hightower and Enoli (Blackfox).  John entered the mission on Aug 18, 1805 at age ten and departed on April 30, 1811.  Sixkiller and Enoli arrived together on more than one occasion to visit John.  (Moravian Springplace Mission by Rowena McClinton)

Ya-tsoo is listed as a daughter of Six Killer in the Brainerd Journal page 423 by Joyce and Paul Phillips.  It further states that she was ten years old while attending school at Brainerd Mission, learning her letters, full Cherokee, and a wild creature just from the woods.  Possibly this is Susie Sixkiller who later married Yellowhammer, or possibly Ya-tsoo was another daughter who died young or otherwise passed from the record books somehow.

In 1813 Sixkiller was living at Broom's Town in Chatoogi District, Cherokee Nation East.  In 1838 he resided in Island Town at the Chatoogee River, and while living here he and his family were rounded up and confined by U.S. troops under the command of Gen. Winfield Scott.  His brother Salawee, who lived about a mile away, was also captured at the same time.  Sixkiller's brother-in-law, Smoke Smith lived about 1/4 mile from him, and his son, Cricket Sixkiller lived about 1 mile away.

The Six Killer sold his property at Natchee Creek (where he resided) to Joseph M. McMinn, 1818.

Land Grant from Treaty of Feb 1819 -

I have Surveyed for the Six Killer 640 acres of land on burning town creek.  Beg(inning) at an ash on the North side of the creek then South West corner, thence North 320 poles to a stake, thence East 320 poles to a stake and white oak, crossing the creek thence South 320 poles to a stake, thence west  320 poles to the Beginning.

Surveyed 29th Sept 1820 including his improvement and house in the center.

    Jonathan Blithe     )

Gidian F. Morris    )   S.C.C.              Robert Armstrong      Surveyor

Six Killer of Georgia, to be paid $328.50, upon arrival in the Cherokee country west of the Mississippi, having emigrated under the treaty with the Cherokee Nation of December 29th 1835.

Upon arriving in the west with Colston's detachment, Sixkiller settled near what would become Baptist Mission in Goingsnake District.  Many of his children lived nearby.  He was elected Councilor representing Goingsnake district, 1843, 1845, 1847, 1849, 1851, & 1853.

Sixkiller was President of the Going Snake District Temperance Society in 1844.  Vice President was Too-na-ye Saunders, and C.B. Bushyhead was Secretary. (Cherokee Messenger, Sept 1st 1844)

Sallie Walker's Widow Claim #493-138 - Soldier & Abraham Sixkiller give sworn statement that prior to Sallie's marriage to John Walker, she had been married to Chicasaw Sixkiller, who died on Oct 10th 1856.

Katie Sixkiller Pension Claim #626-025 - Sallie Walker states that she is 84 years old and that she knew Soldier & Katie (Hair) Sixkiller ever since they were children.  Also that Soldier Sixkiller was her son-in-law.

There is a question as to whether Gu-er-tsa Smith was the mother of all of Sixkiller's children.  Abraham Sixkiller states in his Guion Miller application that some of his uncles were half brothers to his father, Soldier Sixkiller.  He goes on to say that his father's mother was Katy, but he may have misspoken, as his father's wife was named Katy.

An 1842 claim seems to indicate that Nancy was the mother of Cricket, Redbird, and Tail SixKiller.  The three are listed as children and heirs of Nancy with their father, Sixkiller, giving testimony.  Unless Nancy and Gu-er-tsa Smith were the same person, Sixkiller must have had children by at least two wives.  Of note on this subject, Sixkiller's last wife, Sallie, does not seem to indicate that any of the children were hers, but she does refer to Soldier Sixkiller as her son-in-law.

He married (1) Gu-er-tsa Smith, b. in Cherokee Nation East, (Georgia), (daughter of Cabin Smith and Jennie __________). The name Gu-er-tsa or Quatsey, Quaitie, and various other spellings and variations in pronunciation, is the Cherokee version of Betsey.

Gu-er-tsa appears to have died before 1851, as shown by the fact that Sixkiller's second wife Sallie is listed on the 1851 Drennan roll with his household (#208 Goingsnake District).

                    Children:

         2.     i.    Blackhaw2 Sixkiller.

                 iii.   Susan Sixkiller, d. 26 Jan 1873.  Cherokee name was Su-sa-nie  Su-dul-de-he.

She married Yellowhammer.  Yellowhammer lived in the Chattooga Valley, Cherokee Nation East.  He came west in Benge's Detachment and lived on Fourteen Mile Creek.

Generation Two

2.  Blackhaw2 Sixkiller, (Sixkiller1) d. 28 Nov 1875.  Cherokee name was Ka-ni-gu  Su-da-la-di-hi.  Blueford Sixkiller lists his father's name as Blackhawk Sixkiller on his Miller app.  Other sources show the name as Blackhaw.  As I understand it, black haw and redhaw grew in thickets in the areas where the Cherokee lived in the early days.

       He married Diana 'Da-ye-ni', (daughter of U-yer-s-gi and Gu-da-yi) d. 1881.

                    Children:

3.  Delaware2 Sixkiller, (Sixkiller1) b. in Cherokee Nation East, d. 14 Jul 1864 at his home in Cherokee Nation West.  Cherokee name was Ay-qun-kee or Ah-quan-kee (Ah-won-gi), another Cherokee name for Delaware was  Ah-wa-quo-nu-gi  Aquan-tee.

From Chronicles of Oklahoma page 48, Memories of George Mayes: The horror and cruelty of the conflict (Civil War) was forcefully imprinted upon him early in the war when he was present during the revolting murder of Delaware Six Killer, a Cherokee who was bushwhacked because he didn't want to go to war.   "They shot him down," Uncle George recalled, "They whooped in front of his house and as he ran out the back door they ambushed him there although he got one of them first.  I was just a boy then and visiting over at their place.  His children and I ran to his body.  I'll never forget how they acted.  They didn't cry and neither did their mother.  They just stood there stunned.  I finally told them we had to do something.  I got a nigger to help me carry him in and bury him in a box."

         13.    iv.  Julia A. Sixkiller b. ABT 1865.

4.  Cricket2 Sixkiller, (Sixkiller1) b. ABT 1806 in Cherokee Nation East, Georgia, d. 20 Sep 1862 in Baxter Springs, KS , during the Civil War.  Cricket lived at Island Town, Chattooga River, close to his father and his uncle (Smoke Smith).

Came west in Daniel Colston's detachment with his wife Deborah on the Trail of Tears.  Cricket and Debby had been married less than a month when they began their journey west on the Trail of Tears.  Their detachment started out on August 28th 1838 under the direction of Hair Conrad, but Assistant Conductor Daniel Colston took over in leading the group west.

Elected councilor of the Cherokee Nation representing Goingsnake district 1859-60.

    Cherokee name was Ta-lah-toh  Su-dul-de-he.

Emmet Starr indicates that Cricket may have also went by the name Johnson Sixkiller.  Within the Dawes testimony of David Harris, (who married Cricket's daughter, Susan) he states that Cricket also went by the name Johnson Sixkiller.

He married (1) 1 Aug 1838 in Old Cherokee Nation, Georgia by Rev Chamberlain, Deborah Whaley, b. ABT 1823 in Georgia, (daughter of Samuel Whaley and Mariah Kelley) d. ABT 1890.

Redbird came over the Trail of Tears in the Daniel Colston detachment.

He became Judge of Saline District on June 6, 1872, and on the succeeding November was promoted to the Supreme Bench of the State.

October 29th, 1866, Redbird was appointed by Chief W. P. Ross to a committee authorized to conclude an agreement with the Union Pacific Railroad Company southern branch for the construction of a railroad that would pass through Cherokee lands. (A Political History of the Cherokee Nation, 1838-1907- pg 212 by Morris L. Wardell).

The above claim indicates a high level of activity of troop movement in the Goingsnake District and is just one example of how the Cherokee suffered from the effects of the war.  Redbird's place was east of present day Westville, Okla at this time (he later moved to Locust Grove).  Besides losing his crops & livestock to the bushwhackers, they also killed his wife Permelia and infant son in her arms as she tried to protect her children and the farm.

The Westville Brick Factory was located on the old Redbird Sixkiller homestead.  The Buffington Hotel and other buildings in and around Westville were built using the Westville brick.

Cherokee Advocate   November 10, 1882   Local News

Senator Frog Sixkiller of Saline is reported as improving

    Cherokee Advocate   December 1, 1882

It gives us great pleasure to be able to inform his numerous friends, that Sen. Frog Sixkiller, who was so dangerously sick when Council convened three weeks since, has sufficiently improved to make the trip from his home in Saline to this place without experiencing any serious results.  He is still very feeble, but is gaining day by day.  Ool-skah-sut-ty was one of the grandest spirits that ever honored the Council House of the Cherokees.  His mantle when laid aside, by the dying old Chieftain, could not have been taken up by worthier hands then by the son who now wears it and who we all love to honor in the person of Sen. Frog Sixkiller of Saline District, C. N.  (transcribed by Nita Justice).

Sam was unarmed on Christmas Eve, 1886,  when a man (Dick Vann) who held a grudge for having been arrested in the past, came up to him and shot him on the streets of Muskogee.

Captain Sixkiller was in the Patterson Store buying Christmas presents for his children when someone came in and told him that he was wanted outside.  As he stepped outside onto the porch a man on horseback opened fired and shot him.  This supposedly occurred because Sixkiller had killed an outlaw named Dick Glass in Choctaw Country.  Mr. Glass had committed several crimes and when Captain Sixkiller spotted him hauling two barrels of whiskey he blocked the road by chopping down a tree, and then shot him.

The April 11, 1877 edition of the Cherokee Advocate reported, "Sixkiller . . . is having a wall put around the National Prison - solid boards, ten feet high, which encloses two acres of ground, and adds to the looks and safety of that institution muchly."

Well-built gallows in the enclosure were described several years later as "not the worse for wear, as the

authorities inclined to be very merciful."

"The High Sheriff" in order to beautify and improve the appearance of the Capitol Square, has grubbed out all of the stumps and overgrowth which covered, to the disgust of the citizens, the entire square, and has placed in their stead, some beautiful shade trees, which is very suggestive to our enterprising citizens that they should do likewise, which would not only add to the appearance of the town, but would

enhance the value of their property wonderfully."

From Indian Pioneer History interview # 7699  Sept 29th 1937 with S. R. Lewis:  "Captain Sixkiller is known in history as the man who killed and captured the notorious Dick Glass band of Negro outlaws and murderers in the famous battle at Limestone Gap in the Choctaw Nation".

His disease was consumption.  For the last six months his health has been declining.  Three weeks ago he started with his family to Colorado but was taken worse at Vinita and died.  He was buried from the Methodist church in that town Thursday afternoon.  A large number of friends attended the funeral services which were conducted by the pastor, Rev.
